San Luis Peak in the distance - Early June morning along Segment 20
Introduction
Segment 20 of the Colorado Trail is an interesting segment for a
few different reasons. This segment of trail is shared with the Continental Divide Trail and also the Skyline Trail. So at different
times throughout segment 20 you will see signs for both of these:

Segment 20 passes through the LaGarita Wilderness which is a truly
remote gem of an area in Colorado. Another unique thing about this
segment is that is passes very close to a Colorado 14er, San Luis Peak,
which is Colorado's 50th highest ranked peak.
Trailhead Access
Start - Eddiesville TH
The Eddiesville TH is a very remote TH in the LaGarita
Wilderness of Colorado. While 4x4 is recommended, it is not typically
required.
From Saguache, CO (see below for slightly different directions
coming from Gunnison) - Drive west on HWY 114 for 35 miles until you
reach a turnoff to the left for Rd 17GG. Drive on 17GG for 5.25 miles
where it ends:

Turn right on NN14 and proceed 1.25 miles toward Upper Dome
Reservoir and an intersection with 15GG. There is a sign here:

Turn south onto 15GG. It is 21 miles of more dirt road to the TH
from this point. Continue for 4.2 miles where 15GG basically becomes
14DD. There is a gate and sign here:

This road is also called FS794 and many of the signs you see from here
on out are small 794 signs. Continue another 3.9 miles on 14DD (794) and
you will come across a sign on your right for the Historic Stage Route:

At 9.85 miles there is a Y in the road. Continue to follow 794 to the
right. Another Y will greet you at 12 miles, stay left, again following
794. The rest of the road is easy to follow. At one point you will cross
Nutras creek. After gaining some elevation the road will begin
descending down to Stewart Creek. There are some nice campsites in this
area along the road. You will see a turnoff for the Stewart Creek TH
just before reaching the actual Eddiesville TH. There is camping at this
TH and parking for probably 25 vehicles. There is no restroom and no
services of any kind here, although water is plentiful.

From Gunnison, CO - Drive east on HWY 50 for 8.1 miles from Main
Street in Gunnison and turn south on HWY 114. Drive 19 miles to a
turnoff to the right (south) for NN14. Continue on NN14 for 7 miles to
Upper Dome Reservoir and an intersection with 15GG. Follow above for the
remaining directions...
Trail Details
An important note about segment 20:
The Colorado Trail is marked using small markers affixed to trees and
signposts etc. The continental Divide Trail is marked with 3-5 ft high
posts. Along segment 20 you will be following Continental Divide trail
signposts. The interesting thing about the posts and the trail is that
there are almost no markers of any kind. When I finished mapping Segment
20 in in June of 2008 I only found 3 markers along the entire segment
(and I hiked it both ways). One marker was on a gate and was actually a
Colorado Trail Foundation sticker, 1 was at the highpoint and the other
was at San Luis Pass. Here is a photo of me, at the highpoint, standing
next to one of the many Continental Divide trail signposts you will see
along this segment:

Segment 20 starts at the Eddiesville Trailhead (Waypoint 1). Leaving the
TH, hike south down the road, crossing over Stewart Creek. Reach a trail
register and some signage at .15 miles (Waypoint 2). Pass through a gate
at .23 miles. From this point you will hike along a private fence for
some time. Cross reliable water sources at .3 and .78 miles. Pass
through a gate (Waypoint 6) at 1.15 miles. At 1.43 miles in you will
come to a trail junction with the Machin Basin Trail. The Machin Basin
trail heads off toward the creek to the east but is hardly visible. Pass
a third gate at 3.5 miles. Waypoint 9 is a stream at 10,737 ft. While
there is plenty of great camping along this segment, there is a really
nice spot near mile 4.2 (see photo for Waypoint 10). Continue on,
passing water at 4.6, 5.2, 6.0, 6.5, and 6.8 miles (Waypoint 15).
Reaching Waypoint 15 you will have completed 1/2 of the elevation gain
en route to the segment highpoint. More water is found at 7.1 miles.
Reach the trail junction with the Stewart Creek Trail at 11,792 ft and
7.45 miles. Like the Machin Basin trail the trail marked here as the
Stewart Creek Trail is not visible as it appears it is used very
infrequently. At mile 9 you will get a good view of the remaining route
up to the highpoint, a saddle between 14er San Luis Peak and unnamed pt
13,155. See photo of Waypoint 18 for a view of this route. Continue
hiking up through the willows to the highpoint at 12,653ft where you are
rewarded with awesome views. Continue to lose elevation now as you pass
under the hoodoos below unnamed pt 13,155. Continue on the obvious trail
reaching a lower saddle at 10.2 miles and 12,337ft. Continue losing
elevation until you reach water at mile 11 along the forest near 12,000
ft. Begin climbing steeply up to another saddle at 12,389ft (Waypoint
24). You are now only .6 miles from San Luis Pass. Follow the obvious
trail to San Luis Pass at 11,950 ft and 12.7 miles.
